Ultrasound assessment of the cervix.

چکیده
Ultrasound of the Cervix—Techniques Initial attempts at evaluating the cervix used transabdominal ultrasound (TAU). Unfortunately, this technique was found to be imperfect, because of (1) fetal parts obscuring the cervix, especially after 20 weeks, (2) the requirement of bladder filling, which can elongate the cervix and mask funneling, and (3) long distance from the probe to the cervix. Translabial (also known as transperineal) ultrasound, first used in France in the early 1980s, proved to be more useful. This technique involves having the patient lie on table with the hips and knees flexed, while a gloved transducer is positioned on the perineum in a sagittal orientation between the patient’s labia majora. Elevation of the patient’s hips with a cushion is sometimes used to improve visualization. Compared with TAU, this technique is not impaired by obstruction by fetal parts, and does not require bladder filling, achieving close to 100% visualization. Other advantages of this technique are that the transducer is closer to the cervix, but does not enter the vagina (so no pressure can be exerted on the cervix), it Correspondence: Vincenzo Berghella, MD, Division of Maternal–Fetal Medicine, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pnm-1: Applications of Hysterosonography for The Detection of Intracavitary Uterine Abnormalities
Hysterosonography (SHG) is a new noninvasive technique that involves the slow infusion of sterile saline solution into the uterus during ultrasound imaging. Expansion of endometrial cavity by SHG allows optimal visualization and plays an important role in the evaluation of abnormalities related to the uterus. The most common indications for hysterosonography are: abnormal uterine bleeding both ...
متن کاملHysterosalpingography in the assessment of congenital cervical Anomalies: Pictorial Review
Cervical abnormalities may be congenital or acquired. Congenital anomalies of the cervix are rarely isolated, and more commonly accompany other uterine anomalies. Various imaging tools have been used in the assessment of Mullerian duct anomalies (MDAs). Currently, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the modality of choice for definitive diagnosis and classification of the MDAs. Hysterosalpingog...

OBJECTIVE The purpose of this research was to detect cervical ripening with a new quantitative ultrasound technique. METHODS Cervices of 13 nonpregnant and 65 timed pregnant (days 15, 17, 19, 20, and 21 of pregnancy) Sprague Dawley rats were scanned ex vivo with a 70-MHz ultrasound transducer. Ultrasound scatterer property estimates (scatterer diameter [SD], acoustic concentration [AC], and s...

Objective: To compare transabdominal (TA) and transvaginal (TV) ultrasound assessment of cervical length at 16-41 weeks gestation. Methods: TA and TV ultrasound measurements of cervical length were made on 491 pregnancies of 16-41 weeks gestation. Cervical length was measured from internal to external cervical os.
